MELBOURNE CUP DAY BBQ
As we have done for the last few years, we will holding a barbeque lunch on Melboune Cup Day,
Tuesday 5th November, at Rob and Annis’s home to raise funds for rare cancer research. We will be
selling items such as plants, jams, marmalades, pickles etc as per 2022/23 events. This year we will
also have used books for sale.
There will be a short ride before the BBQ, or just turn up around about midday to the Ballard’s at
11 Grosvenor Drive Wandana Heights.
BBQ snags, salads and slices will be on the menu. There is no cost, but we ask for a donation to
support cancer research and to avail yourself of some of the bargains on offer.
Note: This is a cash only event. Just bring along some folding stuff and forget the plastic!
We will conduct a sweep to add some more interest to the day, and of course there will be prizes for
“Fashions in the Backyard”!!

David Jolly and Jimbo are organising this year’s festivities. To cover the costs of Christmas treats and
decorations we will be asking $5 a head from everyone attending. Any change from this amount will
be added to our fund raising for rare Cancers Australia. Jimbo and David will be compiling a list of
attendees and collecting the money over the next few weeks.
AROUND THE BAY MARSHALLING
A big thank you to David P, Jimbo, Geoff J, Andrew B, Tony, Paddy, John H, Ian K, Ken B, Mary, Bob,
Murray, Julie, Dennis, Mickey and Annis for giving up most of their Sunday on the 6th October (and
for getting up at the crack of dawn for a 6:30 start!) to help at Bicycle Network’s Around the Bay in a
Day event. About 2500 riders passed through our checkpoint and we distributed lunches, organized
ferry tickets, supervised their storage of bikes on the ferry for every one of them, plus
miscellaneous enquiries and help.
Not only was it a fun day for all concerned but we also raised $1350 to add to our fund raising
efforts.!! Well done guys!! Photos from day shown on last page.
RACV BIKE ASSIST
Geoff James has investigated the costs and benefits of RACV BikE Assist. This is what he has found
out…
You can have your Bike covered for roadside assistance through the RACV in the following ways:
If you have RACV Total Care (for your vehicle/s) you are automatically covered for Bike Assist.
Alternatively, you can take out a separate Bike Assist policy, the cost is currently $47.00 per year.
I recently changed a tyre and tube (rear wheel on the E Bike) in my garage, in the end I had to get
help from Jim Hayes to refit the wheel, and that was with the bike suspended on a Bike Stand. Jim
and I agreed that it would be near impossible to do it on the side of the road.
I reckon RACV Bike Assist is worth having, especially if you’re on the wrong side of ‘Senior
Citizenship’.
